Teledyne FLIR wins $15M weapon optics contract

Deal with NATO partner country to provide long-range thermal sights used by snipers.

Teledyne’s FLIR Defense subsidiary says it has won a $15 million contract to deliver more than 150 of its “ThermoSight HISS-XLR” weapon sights to an unspecified NATO partner country.

Awarded via the US Army, the agreement also includes parts, training, and other in-country support.

Typically used by snipers, the long-range optics inside the clip-on thermal weapon sight can identify targets from a distance of more than 2 kilometers - a 25 per cent increase in distance compared with earlier models.

The sight also features a high-resolution 640x480 mid-wave infrared (MWIR) sensor for use at night.

“Long-range optics coupled with an HD display provide crisp imagery, while portrait orientation compensates for bullet drop at extreme ranges,” states Teledyne FLIR, with the firm’s executive vice president and general manager JihFen Lei adding:

“The HISS-XLR is a highly capable weapon sight that helps enhance mission success for snipers and other long-range shooter needs. We recognize its importance to militaries around the globe, now more than ever, and we continue to invest in our ThermoSight line of combat-proven technology solutions.”

FLIR Defense says that the sights are being produced at its facility in Billerica, Massachusetts, with deliveries already under way and set to continue through 2024.

Teledyne acquired the FLIR business just over three years ago in a cash-plus-stock deal valued at around $8 billion, and last month completed the addition of Eindhoven-based Adimec, which specializes in high-performance cameras for machine vision, healthcare, and security applications.
