Jenoptik brings TESAG's wafers in-house

Acquiring its long-standing wafer supplier extends Jenoptik's diode laser activities.

Jenoptik has acquired Three-Five Epitaxial Services AG (TESAG), the Berlin-based provider of epitaxial structures for laser diodes which was already an established supplier to the company.

"Our target is to serve the product chain and to extend our core competencies," Katrin Lauterbach of Jenoptik told optics.org. "We want to be faster, more flexible and more efficient, and to secure the high quality of Jenoptik's products."

TESAG was created in 1999 as a spin-off from the Ferdinand-Braun-Institute (FBH) and is based in Berlin's Adlershof technology park, close to Jenoptik's laser bar production site. "Ferdinand-Braun-Institute will prolong and extend its successful research collaborations with TESAG," commented FBH director Gunther Trankle. "I am strongly convinced that there are plenty of exciting opportunities for the new TESAG under the guidance of Jenoptik."

As part of the deal, TESAG will continue to sell to and perform services for other companies, but the bulk will be provided to Jenoptik. The majority of Jenoptik's high-power diode lasers are based on TESAG technology.

"TESAG's business will be further developed," said Lauterbach. "There are business contacts to other Jenoptik divisions such as the LED and photodiode business. External clients could use the production of TESAG as a foundry offer."

The acquisition allows Jenoptik to position itself as one of the few total service providers for high-power laser diodes, according to the company. "Jenoptik can now access the entire manufacturing chain, starting with the wafer processing and on through the separation, coating, assembly, stacking and fibre coupling of high power diode lasers," noted Lauterbach. "It is a logical step to improve and secure the quality of our products."
