JDSU provides components to National Ignition Facility

30 Jun 2009

MILPITAS, CA, 29 June 2009 – JDSU (NASDAQ: JDSU and TSX: JDU) today announced that it is supplying optical components called electro-optic modulators for the new National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser system at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory located in Livermore, California.

The NIF is the world’s highest-energy laser system that consists of 192 laser beams. The system focuses nearly two million joules of energy onto a tiny pellet filled with deuterium and tritium, creating temperatures and pressures that exist in the cores of stars and giant planets. Creating these conditions allows the NIF to conduct a wide range of experiments that have never before been possible on earth.

JDSU electro-optic modulators perform multiple functions within the NIF to switch and direct laser light, including fail-safe switching, complex pulse shaping, and phase modulation that helps prevent damage of the system as the lasers generate the powerful energy.

"JDSU has worked closely with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for many years and is honored to provide optical technology for a laser system that could contribute to major scientific advancements for both our country and the world," said Charles Neagoy, senior product line manager of modulators for the Communications and Commercial Optical Products business segment at JDSU.

JDSU modulators were prominently displayed as part of the NIF dedication tour on May 29, 2009. Construction of NIF began in 1997 and was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration for key scientific missions.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory was founded in 1952 and is a national security laboratory, with a mission to ensure national security and apply science and technology to the important issues of our time. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is managed by Lawrence Livermore National Security LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration.
