| The Airborne Laser Test Bed (ALTB), housed in the nose cone of a Boeing 747 aircraft, is based on a complex chemical oxygen-iodine laser (COIL), and has been beset by problems ever since its inception. Although the testbed is close to showing the capability to shoot down hostile threats, the MDA says that there are no current plans to build additional aircraft featuring the system. Credit: MDA. |
