NASA's WFIRST mission is based around a 2.4 m-diameter mirror - the same size as Hubble's - but will use a much larger focal plane array detector to image a far larger section of the sky in the near-infrared. The aim is to find out more about the nature of dark energy and dark matter, while a coronagraph instrument will be used to investigate exoplanet atmospheres. Image: NASA. |
